One of the things that keeps me excited about teaching from day to day is the chance to get students excited about different subjects and topics. Take today, for example. In the midst of a mini unit study on the reading strategy of making inferences, I pulled a few read alouds to teach idioms.
Student: "Idioms - ha ha - It sounds like 'idiots'."
Me: "Yep, and I won't hear that again now, will I?"
Ok, so we
got off to a rocky start, but once we
got the ball rolling and the students were
all ears, we managed to all be
on the same page.
My favorite thing was seeing the kids become engaged in our class book project - a page by each student, divided in half, with the left side dedicated to the literal meaning/illustration of a common (or not so common) idiom and the right side dedicated to the figurative meaning/illustration of that same idiom. Yes, we did have a moment of quiet in the day. Amazing! (And the illustrations are cute and creative too!)
Overall, we had a pretty good day, and by the end of it, we were pretty much all in the same boat - and that was a nice place to be...
