No school today. And, honestly, no school work today either. But, aside from a few errands and a breakfast treat, I have been voraciously reading a book I picked up at the library by John Wooden called "A Game Plan for Life," in which he devotes chapters to seven individuals who were his mentors and seven individuals to whom he served as mentor.
In one such chapter, Coach Wooden discusses the impact his father had as a mentor on his life. He gave John Wooden a card after graduating from elementary school with a poem on one side and guidelines on the reverse.
These guidelines were seven rules for living:
from "A Game Plan for Life" (by John Wooden, p. 13)
1) Be true to yourself each day.
2) Make each day your masterpiece.
3) Help others.
4) Drink deeply from good books.
5) Make friendship a fine art.
6) Build a shelter against a rainy day.
7) Pray for guidance and give thanks for your blessings every day.
These rules along with other valuable insight and quotes from this book have given me much food for thought today. There is much to be learned about being a mentor and being the one mentored within these pages, and I am looking forward to putting some of these thoughts into practice in my own classroom (and life!) too...
